Standards, Time, and Variety | Final Fantasy XIV



So yeah, I've been heavily invested in Final Fantasy XIV's development. The online Final Fantasies intrigue me for a bunch of admittedly finely tuned personal points, but I'm starting to notice some things about what it means to even play one of these things now.

It's become rather odd that someone like me could loyally stand behind something so contingent on aspects of the gaming community that I deplore, but I do and pragmatically speaking it's one of the few games doing interesting things outside systems and mechanics as well. An MMO (at least in how the genre standard has become set for the past ten years) has become a big melting pot of madness.

"M.G.S.S.P.P."



Ever since Metal Gear Solid 2, I've had a rather love/hate relationship not with the series, but with people's grasp on it. As many problems as I have had with how Kojima has handled things over the years, they pale in comparison to the weariness I feel for 'defending' the series at this point. This is wrongheaded on two accounts. First is the grasp that I've only recently let go of in the past few years and that's feeling like I am defending or excusing the series for a myriad of things.

If Sniper Wolf is Mistral's analogue in Revengeance, Psycho Mantis is no doubt Monsoon's. This one seems less intentional however, but it is a strong correlation nonetheless. Again though, in Revengeance the antagonists are painted in a far more black and white manner, so the resolve Monsoon exhibits seems to be more absolute than what Mantis displayed.

An Addendum to Black Noise

Where we go from what I described as incessant noise looks to have been bolstered by a very key development in how media content is presented to users in video games, chiefly videos. Don't get me wrong, it's a fine thing to have as an option to supplement content, but recently I've seen the general sentiment that borders on actively willing it to replace the methods we already have to deliver information. Change is a painful and inevitable process, but its not always necessary and innovation is never any guarantee of efficacy or effectiveness.

We've seen a lot of change in this generation of game consoles. A lot. How much of it has been for the better?

Detailing that change would be a waste of my and your time, so I'll cut to the relevance here, videos and what they mean going forward.

The Dark Descent | Fear of a Different Sort



Amnesia: The Dark Descent has been sitting in my Steam library for almost two years now. For someone who has a sort of noted preference for survival-horror games, I'm still not entirely sure why I never touched it until two days ago. It could have simply been the backdrop, which while dripping with atmosphere, isn't exactly the most rare setting in a game (I think Penumbra actually edges it out in that regard). It also could just as well have been the almost instinctual impulse of negation towards crowd praise I'm somewhat partial to. This isn't to say that Amnesia is a critical darling above and beyond reproach, just that it was/is consistently lauded for being one of the few games keeping 'survival-horror's essence' alive where most games have simply abandoned it. I always knew I'd have to take that bit of information into consideration when I finally got to it.

Definition of BLACK NOISE:

Black noise is also called silent noise.
  • Silence
  • Noise with a 1/fβ spectrum, where β > 2. This formula is used to model the frequency of natural disasters.
  • Noise that has a frequency spectrum of predominantly zero power level over all frequencies except for a few narrow bands or spikes. Note: An example of black noise in a facsimile transmission system is the spectrum that might be obtained when scanning a black area in which there are a few random white spots. Thus, in the time domain, a few random pulses occur while scanning.
  • Noise with a spectrum corresponding to the blackbody radiation (thermal noise).[2][3]

Nintendo & Me | I've Changed My Relationship to 'It's Complicated'



I trapped myself in my room over the weekend and went about completing Super Mario Bros. U, ZombiU, and making some major progress in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. I've warmed up to my little Wii U, but I'm also kind of iffy on trying to care about Nintendo itself at this point. This seems to be the topic this week, as a string of Nintendo announcements has everybody questioning Nintendo's place and relevance for 'today's gamer'.

The Worst Parts of Braid, Portal, and Metroid | Antichamber


I've never seen a game try so hard to be outside of the box...

I suppose I'll preface this brief post by saying no, I did not like Antichamber. In most respects I outright hated the game. However, I have to hope that because my reaction was so potent towards its primary M.O., the designer did what he did intentionally and by extension the game is successful in its aim in many respects.

The Value of the Archivist



As you may or may not know, this week is National Library Week, and---as I may or may not have mentioned here, I work at a library.

I'm given mostly free reign over anything that gets plugged into a power socket here so oftentimes I go out of my way to make games or the culture surrounding them available to people, but it's been weird going these past few years as getting some of it to take has shown progress in certain areas and very little in others.

There's Subtlety, Then There's Cowardice | BioShock Infinite

No, you shhhh.
Let down again...

...much less than I became with BioShock admittedly, but still---I can hope that Irrational will now devote their talent towards other venues at this point. I'm personally hoping I never see another System Shock 7 and I've officially resigned myself from wanting any more from a BioShock title. Infinite has given me some closure at least, and I'm thankful for it.

Did I hate Infinite? Of course not. In fact I enjoyed it more than its two predecessors overall. That said, what I walked away with has become too similar to what I felt for the original BioShock, which is a progressively terminal state of apathy. So, let me go ahead and get this out of the way Elizabeth, it must be said.

Synthetic Play #2 | Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance


The reaction to Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance has confused me. Raiden has suddenly become cool.

He was supposed to do that in Metal Gear Solid 4, and he was only supposed to do that because of the disgusting reaction gamers gave him in 2001 with his debut in Metal Gear Solid 2. Now Platinum Games has seemingly turned him into---
